Write a ReviewNeeded More Information Before Leaving
I felt that some practical details could have been explained more clearly before I travelled. I had quite a few questions about what to expect and had to ask for clarification. Once I arrived, things became easier and the actual experience was much better than my initial uncertainty suggested.
More Than Just a Holiday
I expected the trip to be mostly about sightseeing and having fun, but the volunteering made it feel like there was another purpose behind it. Some of the experiences were challenging, but they were also the ones I remember most clearly. It definitely wasn't a typical holiday.
My First Backpacking Trip
I'd never done proper backpacking before and was nervous about managing everything myself. The programme gave me a starting point while still leaving plenty of room to explore independently. That balance worked really well for me as a first-time backpacker.
Volunteering Changed My Perspective
The volunteering work wasn't always easy, and some days were definitely more tiring than others. But seeing the people we were helping made the difficult days feel worthwhile. I came back with a very different perspective on some things I used to take for granted.
A Few Things Didn't Go to Plan
Not everything during the trip was perfectly organised and there were a couple of changes to the original plans. It was frustrating at the time, especially when we'd already made our own arrangements around them. Still, the experience overall was worthwhile and I learned to be a lot more flexible while travelling.
Met People From Everywhere
One of my favourite parts of the trip was meeting other travellers from completely different backgrounds. We ended up spending a lot of our free time together exploring the area. I went expecting to make a few friends and ended up keeping in touch with people long after the trip.
The Cultural Experience Was the Best Part
I originally signed up because I wanted to travel, but the cultural side ended up being what I enjoyed most. Being around local people and seeing how everyday life worked was very different from being a normal tourist. It made the trip feel much more meaningful.
My First Solo Adventure
I'd never travelled abroad on my own before, so doing a gap year programme felt like a pretty big step. Having the volunteering element gave me something meaningful to focus on while I was getting used to a new country. I came home feeling much more independent than when I left.
